چکیده

Electron antineutrinos accompanying the β-decays of long-lived isotopes of uranium, thorium, and potassium in the earth carry information about the quantity and distribution of these geologically important, heat-producing isotopes. This letter discusses terrestrial antineutrino flux measurements at both a continental and an oceanic site. A combined analysis of both measurements provides information on the partitioning of uranium and thorium between earth’s mantle and crust and of the earth’s radioactive heat. This direct information on the earth’s deep interior represents a significant development in geochemistry and geophysics.

Estimating terrestrial uranium and thorium by antineutrino flux measurements.

Uranium and thorium within the Earth produce a major portion of terrestrial heat along with a measurable flux of electron antineutrinos. These elements are key components in geophysical and geochemical models. Their quantity and distribution drive the dynamics, define the thermal history, and are a consequence of the differentiation of the Earth. Knowledge of uranium and thorium concentrations ...

We estimate terrestrial antineutrino and neutrino fluxes according to different models of Earth composition. We find large variations, corresponding to uncertainties on the estimated U , T h and K abundances in the mantle. Information on the mantle composition can be derived from antineutrino flux measurements after subtracting the crust contribution. This requires a good description of the cru...

Antineutrino geophysics with liquid scintillator detectors

Detecting the antineutrinos emitted by the decay of radioactive elements in the mantle and crust could provide a direct measurement of the total abundance of uranium and thorium in the Earth. In calculating the antineutrino flux at specific sites, the local geology of the crust and the background from the world’s nuclear power reactors are important considerations. Employing a global crustal ma...

Reactor antineutrino anomaly with known 13

We revisit the reactor antineutrino anomaly using the recent reactor flux independent determination of sizable 13 by considering the full set of the absolute reactor e flux measurements. When normalized to the predicted flux of Mueller et al. [Phys. Rev. C 83, 054615 (2011)], the new world average, after including results from Palo Verde, Chooz, and Double Chooz, is 0:959 0:009 (experiment unce...
